The Ideal Amount of Water

In general, your lawn should receive 1-2 inches of water per week. This includes rainwater, so if you’ve had a few rainy days, you may not need to supplement with any additional water. You can use a rain gauge to measure the amount of water your lawn is receiving each week.

When to Water

If you do need to water your lawn, it’s best to do it in the early morning. Watering your lawn in the evening or night can cause the water to sit on the surface of your lawn for too long, making it more vulnerable to disease. Aim for between the hours of 5 and 11 A.M. for the best results!

Invest in a Rain Gauge

A rain gauge is an affordable and easy way to measure the amount of water your lawn is receiving each week. This will help you decide when and if you need to provide additional water. You can find rain gauges at most home improvement stores or online. If your rain gauge says your lawn has received .5 inches of rainfall in one week, then you know you will need to water for 30 minutes to get to  1 inch or for 60 minutes to receive 1.5 inches.
